ICING O N THE CAKE This visual feast is no ordinary cake it’s edible art specially commissioned from Dinara Kasko, a qualified architect turned passionate pâtissier. Explaining her unconventional switch from designing contemporary buildings and furniture to baking, the 29-year-old Ukrainian says: “I started off baking at home, but I enjoyed this so much that I became more and more interested in it. For me, appearance is as important as taste, so I drew upon my architecture and 3D visualization background to add something new. I particularly like working with sharp straight lines as well as simple plain geometric shapes like cubes, triangles and spheres, so I started designing and making my own molds with a 3D printer.” This 70th anniversary Kasko’s recent edition of Onelife collaborations with Miamibased artist José Margulis, demanded something who works with geometric rather special for the abstractionism and kinetic art to change viewer cover, and what better perspectives, inspired this way to celebrate particular commission. “After I saw José’s Land Rover’s birthday creations and installations than with some cake made of materials including plastic, aluminum and acrylic, WORDS NEAL ANDERSON I sought to transform them PHOTOGRAPHY OLEG KASKO into something edible,” she explains. Her eye-catching creation for the 70th anniversary edition of Onelife has gone above and beyond to create 70 gradient color chocolate profiles designed by the magazine team to each represent a year, as well as the evolution of Land Rover from the first Series I in 1948 through to the new Range Rover Velar. These profiles top a light whipped cheese mousse merging into a crémeux of strawberry, cherry and raspberry above a confit that rests on an almond sponge with lemon peel resting on a crunchy base of caramelized pecans and dried cherries. “I worked to develop a unique recipe for this special commission as I wanted to create something individual, modern and cutting edge,” says Kasko. “It’s been a real honor for me to prepare this cake for Land Rover‘s anniversary, as I like complicated projects and different challenges.” FOR MORE TASTY TREATS see dinarakasko.com The cake was a month in planning and a week in the making. First a 3D computer model was created before digital drawings were prepared for a milling machine. This cut the 70 car profiles from colored chocolate plates. These were then individually mounted together and carefully placed by Kasko on top of the layered cheesecake 89
