EXPERIENCE ARCHITECTURE

EXPERIENCE ARCHITECTURE he iennese architectre rm Delugan Meissl Associated Architects blazes new trails with every building. It seeks to break the shackles of convention and create impressive constrctions, and has certainly succeeded in doing so with the festival hall in r ocated st a few iometres from RAs head oce. This concert hall, which hosts the Tyrolean Festival, looks as though its has travelled to the Tyrolean Alps from a far-away planet. As though it landed and stayed put. Yet this alien object blends in wonderfully with the surrounding landscape. The Viennese architecture firm Delugan Meissl Associated Architects DMAA did not design the building as a stark counterpart to nature, but to fit in harmoniously with its forms and shapes. It is also consistent with the neighbouring Passion Play Theatre, which was designed in the mid ‘50s by the Tyrolean architect Robert Schuller. This modern, round, clear-cut construction is as much a sculpture as a playhouse. Coexisting next to this striking and impressive building is no mean feat, but the DMAA festival hall lives up to the task. It looks like the jagged, mysterious brother next to the white, curvaceous sister. The contrast between the inside and outside of the festival hall is amazing. Once you step inside the building, you can no longer see the energetic, jagged surface of the two interlocking elements. Instead, you find yourself in a calm, bright white room that is harmonious despite he building is m long, 71 m wide and up to 22 m tall. The construction took 18 months to complete and reuired , cubic metres of concrete and tonnes of steel. The concert hall of the yrolean estival by elugan eissl stands next to the Passion Play heatre built in the s by obert chuller. The interior of the auditorium is clad with red acacia wood and can accommodate 862 concertgoers. 70 BORA MAGAZINE

ARCHITECTURE EXPERIENCE The festival hall is by no means DMAA’s only masterpiece. Many of the firm’s buildings look as though they are about to take off. Their tapered edges, origami-like, folded shapes and absence of bulky rectangles make the structures flow. The buildings look like they are on their way somewhere else. Dynamic constructions for dynamic times. Elke Delugan-Meissl and Roman Delugan have been designing buildings together for over 20 years, and with four other partners as DMAA since 00. They started out with he alienlooking festival hall blends in wonderfully with the surrounding landscape. being asymmetric. The interior offers several glimpses of the surrounding landscape. The flowing shapes induce a sense of calm, while the glass-fronted western façade invites you to linger. In the middle of the building lies the well-protected core of the building: the auditorium a red wood-clad place of concentration and tranquillity (until the orchestra strikes up, that is. DMAA has managed to make the path to the event, the concert setting, an experience in itself. The special entrance is modern and original. Radically new, yet very distinctive. It could even be called a construction revolution. The building in Erl has a lot in common with BORA, whose head office is located just a few kilometres away. BORA also focuses on combining form and technology in a new, radically simple yet extremely functional way. Kindred spirits. social housing projects. At the end of the ‘90s they created two residential buildings that are still well known today: the Balkan building in ienna’s Danube City district and the Mischek Tower, which was Austria’s tallest apartment building at the time. Their designs are subtly reminiscent of DMAA’s current style, but they are more toned down and don’t yet resemble a tar Wars ship! aving said that, DMAA’s style is multifaceted. Not all of its recent designs are similar to the festival hall in Erl. But right from the start, the firm’s objective was to create something special, to break away from boring monotony. One example of this is its City Lofts project in Vienna, completed in 001, where none of the apartments are identical. DMAA has always strived to find new approaches to old requirements. Combining comfort and functional living yet constantly asking questions: what kind of environment is conducive to working well or showcasing cars in their best light, or what does a contemporary head office look like ome of DMAA’s creations include the Porsche Museum in tuttgart, the ienna-based head office of the pharmaceutical firm Novartis and the Dutch ilm Museum in Amsterdam. or all of the above, it was never a question of finding a formula then adapting it generically to each new project. DMAA reinvents itself with each new task, bringing about a relentless construction revolution. BORA MAGAZINE 71
